ABOUT BOLIVIA

Empowering Communities in the Heart of South America

Named for the great liberator Simon Bolívar, Bolivia is a mountainous, landlocked nation in the heart of South America. With a population of nearly 9 million, over 60% of its people are of Quechua or Aymara descent, preserving a rich indigenous heritage. Many live as subsistence farmers on the high-altitude plains of the Altiplano.

Bolivia is home to La Paz, the world’s highest capital city, sprawling at 3,600 meters (11,800 feet) near the shores of Lake Titicaca. While Roman Catholicism is the main religion, Bolivia’s diverse culture is reflected in its many faiths and traditions. It is in this unique and challenging environment that CMANA volunteers are called to serve.

A VOLUNTEER'S STORY

A Volunteer Story

In July 2013, I went on my first mission with CMANA to Bolivia. I had only completed my first year of medical school but was still able to gain hands-on experience… I saw physicians with their families serving God. I knew that this was the type of lifestyle I would want to attain.” — Annemarie, Anesthesiologist.
